Good day to you, dear Opponauts,
let's talk about smart and/or successful people you know, who have a horrible, horrible taste in cars. This is not about people who could afford to buy a Porsche but opt for a Golf, nor the people who are Lada or East-German car enthusiasts. Let me give you an example to show you what I mean:
My uncle is a very successful surgeon and an overall smart man, who speaks four languages fluently and is on his way to learn his fifth. He is also a golf ace who thought about going pro for a while - granted, his game may not say anything about his intelligence but about the fact that he doesn't do things half-heartedly.
This smart man has the worst taste in cars I have ever come across. Now one could argue that he probably doesn't care about cars. Yet it isn't quite like that. Whenever he buys one, he meticulously researches the market, looks at different options and then chooses carefully because he owns the cars for a relatively long time. Ladies and gentlemen, here is a list of the last four cars he owned:
Alfa-Romeo 90
To be fair, my memories of this car are a bit clouded. I only remember that I thought the car was incredibly ugly. Still do in fact, even though I am a big fan of Bertones styling from the 70s and 80s. The car was only produced between 84 and 87 and proved to be an incredible flop. My uncle had the 2.4 TD with the incredible power output of 105hp. He sold it in 1990 and bought the....
Renault 21
Also known as the Eagle Medallion in the US. It was slow, it broke down every other day and even though beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, it was ugly. Or maybe let's just say bland. It did have electric windows, a remote controlled central locking mechanism and a computer thingie going for it. That is why my uncle declared it to be better than my fathers E30 convertible, which had no computer thingie going for it (just a check light circuit board). After a couple of years, the computer thingie went all Hal 9000 and locked the pod bay doors occasionally. Thus my uncle got rid of it in 95 and bought his dream car.
No really. He came back from his vacation in the US and said he had finally found the car he was always looking for. Comfortable, great handling, reliable and also very beautiful. He proclaimed it to be the car of his dreams. What car was that, you ask? Well the answer is obviously the...
Chrysler Stratus
He said it was better/ better looking than my father's E32 740i.
Eventually, the car was stolen. No really. I bet his insurance company checked three times if this wasn't a case of fraud. Anyhow, he then went on and bought "the most advanced car in the world"... the
Toyota Prius
I think by now it's obvious that he was trolling us the whole time.
